Microsoft Infrastructure Engineer

Apply

Are you an experienced Microsoft Engineer who feels at home in a hybrid IT environment? At SURF, you’ll work on a modern Microsoft infrastructure in which cloud and on-premises systems are closely integrated. You’ll play a key role in the ongoing development of our environment and in the complete migration of the on-premises Windows Server 2019 landscape to Server 2025. This is a role for an engineer who loves to dive into the technical details and help build the future.

Where you will work

SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.

Working at SURF means working for a unique and open organization. This is evident in everything: the structure of the organization, the setup of the project teams, the culture in our offices, and the atmosphere among colleagues. SURF offers excellent terms of employment and takes a flexible approach to work/life balance. Employees enjoy working independently. In addition, everyone is given the space and freedom to use and develop their talents as effectively and broadly as possible.

The team you will join

You’ll be joining the Internal IT department, specifically the Operational Support team. This is a fast-growing team within SURF that’s responsible for system administration, office automation, and cybersecurity, and serves as the backup for the service desk. Within the team, you’ll work closely with colleagues from various disciplines, such as Linux, Mac, and Microsoft. We share knowledge, help each other out, and are given a lot of freedom to implement improvements and automation.

What you will do

As a Microsoft Infrastructures Engineer, you’ll share responsibility for managing and further developing our hybrid Microsoft environment. You’ll work on an infrastructure in which Microsoft 365, Azure, and an extensive on-premises environment work closely together. In doing so, you’ll play a key role in major technical projects, including the migration of our Windows Server landscape from 2019 to Windows Server 2025, which is scheduled for the coming period.

You’ll not only focus on management but will also continuously explore ways to make the environment smarter, more secure, and more future-proof. You’ll work closely with colleagues in Internal IT and support Information Management in translating functional requirements into sustainable technical solutions.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Managing, maintaining, and further developing our hybrid Microsoft environment;
  • Playing an active role in the migration from Windows Server 2019 to Windows Server 2025;
  • Managing Microsoft 365, Entra ID (Azure AD), Intune, Microsoft Graph API, Active Directory, ADFS, Windows Server 2019–2025, and our hybrid Exchange environment;
  • Automating management tasks with PowerShell and contributing to further standardization;
  • Analyzing incidents, improving management processes, and implementing structural improvements in the areas of performance, continuity, and security;
  • Actively contributing to the further professionalization, automation, and ongoing development of our Microsoft infrastructure.

Your skills and experience

You are an experienced Microsoft Engineer who feels at home in a hybrid IT landscape. You thrive on complex technical challenges and enjoy modernizing existing infrastructures. You look beyond mere management, actively contribute ideas for improvements and automation, and are eager to take responsibility for a stable and future-proof Microsoft environment.

In addition, you have:

  • a college or university level of education and thinking;
  • demonstrable experience with both Microsoft cloud solutions and on-premises Windows Server environments;
  • experience with migration or upgrade projects for Windows Server environments;
  • knowledge of Microsoft 365, Entra ID (Azure AD), Active Directory, Intune, Exchange Hybrid, and PowerShell;
  • an affinity for security, hardening, and compliance;
  • experience with project-based work, preferably using Agile methodologies, and knowledge of ITIL processes;
  • a good command of both Dutch and English.
