Are you passionate about highly reliable infrastructure, privacy, security, software development, and APIs? Then you should definitely read on!

Where you will work

SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research. As an eduID technical specialist, you contribute by being responsible for delivering and further developing the eduID service. You do this for all students, faculty, researchers, and staff in the sector.

Working at SURF means working for a unique and open organization. This is evident in everything: the structure of the organization, the setup of the project teams, the culture in our offices, and the atmosphere among colleagues. SURF offers excellent terms of employment and takes a flexible approach to work/life balance. Employees enjoy working independently. In addition, everyone is given the space and freedom to use and develop their talents as effectively and broadly as possible.

The team you will join

The Trust & Identity team consists of a total of 19 specialists. We specialize in federated authentication and authorization. We work with protocols such as SAML and OpenID Connect, but we also explore innovations like Identity Wallets and Verifiable Credentials. We combine this expertise with a solid foundation in infrastructure using Linux, Ansible, and Docker. Together with external developers, we develop our own services entirely in-house and as open source in languages such as Java, Python, and PHP. Our service portfolio consists of SURFconext, SURFsecureID, eduID, and SURF Research Access Management (SRAM). Want to learn more? Check out our website.

We value team spirit, collaboration, and collegiality: drawing on everyone’s individual expertise, we share knowledge, ask each other for input, and make joint decisions regarding the development and refinement of our services. We therefore place great importance on your personal expertise and learning needs: depending on what you bring to the table and where you’d like to specialize further, we’ll work together to determine which tasks and responsibilities best suit you!

What you will do

Within the Trust & Identity team, the eduID product team focuses specifically on delivering and further developing the eduID service, including the iOS and Android apps. As a technical specialist, you are responsible for the technology, architecture, and operations of eduID. Working closely with the product managers and with (external) operations managers and developers, you ensure that the service remains reliable and available and that it is further developed to remain relevant to SURF’s target audience. You will engage with our members (the educational and research institutions) to understand their application landscape, enabling you to advise them effectively on how to integrate eduID into their systems. You will monitor market developments, including international trends, and contribute to shaping the vision and (technical) roadmap.

What else you’ll be doing

  • You will be technically responsible for the operational management and (further) development of the eduID service, including the eduID (web) applications and mobile apps;
  • You will manage (external) administrators and developers to implement the new developments you’ve defined and bring them into production (securely and tested);
  • You will be responsible for quality management, documentation, and setting up and providing support to institutions and end users;
  • You will explore new ideas by creating proofs of concept and testing them through pilots;
  • You will contribute to the Npuls program and advise them on the integration of eduID and other services into digital sector facilities;
  • You coordinate with federated authentication and authorization implementations from other countries and contribute ideas on how we can ensure (technical) compatibility;
  • Last but not least, you will become part of the trust and identity team. You contribute to the vision, roadmaps, and new services, and you collaborate with your fellow technical specialists from other trust and identity services.

Your skills and experience

You are curious, team-oriented, and understand that at SURF, we can only move forward together. You actively listen to our members’ needs, enjoy brainstorming with colleagues, and share your knowledge within a team of experts. Thanks to your strong communication skills, you feel comfortable in a variety of conversations and have a keen eye for the public values that SURF stands for.

  • You have a college or university level of thinking and working and at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • You have experience with technical responsibility for highly available (large-scale) digital services;
  • You have experience developing digital services or applications, and/or managing developers;
  • You have up-to-date knowledge of and demonstrable experience with (the implementation of) modern internet protocols;
  • Experience with or knowledge of the education sector or IT solutions tailored to education or research is a plus;
  • Experience with and/or interest in identity and access management (IAM) and related open standards is a plus;
  • You are fluent in Dutch and English.

SURF takes pleasure in doing its recruitment itself; acquisition is therefore not appreciated.
