Network Engineer

Where you will work
SURF is the IT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.
The SURF network is one of SURF's most important services. It forms the foundation for all digital communication and collaboration in Dutch education and research. The SURF network is based on a fibre network of about 12 000 km with its own extensive DWDM network and IP/MPLS network. It provides high-quality national and international connectivity. Our ambition is to be a leader in the application of new network technology, enabling users to benefit from new possibilities in education and research.
The team you will join
Your team is responsible for the architecture and development of the SURF network. The team consists of 9 people: 2 technical product managers and 7 network engineers. You work proactively to improve network management and the quality of the SURF network. In addition, you support the SURFfirewall service. You enable innovations in the network by testing new features at an early stage. Daily network management (NOC) is outsourced to a third party, with whom we work closely. Faults can be escalated to us from the NOC. Therefore, each engineer participates in an availability shift, in which the engineer is on-call for one week (1 week every 6 weeks).

What you will do
You obviously have a passion for networking. And of course, as a network engineer in this day and age, you cannot do without a good foundation in software and scripting. A good basic skill and interest in internet networking and the will to learn are just as important.
What else you will be involved in
- You improve the quality of our services by renewing and improving technology, process and documentation;
- You assist with complex network changes; you resolve complex network disruptions in cooperation with the NOC and suppliers;
- You coordinate or contribute to the problem-, capacity-, release- and security-management processes;
- You test new functionalities in our test network and implement them in standard service models (automated where possible);
- You document the set-up of the network and management environment.
Your skills and experience
- You have a wo or hbo education; furthermore, you are result-oriented and can work both independently and in a team.
- You have knowledge of modern network protocols and techniques, such as BGP, ISIS, MPLS-SR, EVPN;
- You have broad knowledge of and experience with IP/MPLS network equipment and software; experience with Juniper hardware and software is an advantage;
- You have knowledge and experience of network monitoring and management systems; Having experience with Cisco NSO, InfluxDB and Grafana is an advantage;
- You have experience troubleshooting complex problems on the network and with management software. Including the necessary collaboration with vendors.
- You are service- and customer-oriented; In addition, you have good oral and written communication skills in Dutch and English.
- It is an advantage if you have knowledge and experience with DWDM networks. It is also an advantage if you have experience with Ribbon hardware and software;
- It is an advantage if you have knowledge of and experience with firewalls. In addition, it is an advantage if you have experience with Fortigate equipment and software;
- It is an advantage if you have knowledge of and experience with network automation, systems (VM, Docker), scripting (python and yaml/xml); GIT and APIs.
