Cybersecurity Engineer SURFcert
ApplyDo you want to make education and research resilient to cyber threats? Do you want to help institutions detect and mitigate cyber threats in a timely manner? And do you think it is important that institutions that fall victim to a cyber attack receive fast and adequate assistance? Then you are the security engineer we are looking for!
Where you will work
SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.
The expertise needed to keep ICT up to date and secure at institutions is scarce, while the challenges in this area are increasing. Security incidents can have major consequences and threaten the continuity of education and research. In the event of an incident, the SURFcert team supports all educational and research institutions affiliated with SURF. SURFcert helps to limit the damage caused by a cyber attack. Our mission is to make education and research more digitally secure.
The team you will join
SURFcert consists of security experts from affiliated institutions and SURF. SURFcert is on standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and continuously monitors the network for threats and acts proactively. In addition, we constantly monitor and check the SURF network for DDoS attacks, for example. SURFcert is in close contact with the Incident Response Teams at the affiliated institutions. We also have a large network, both nationally and globally. We ensure that cybercriminals stay away from Dutch education and research institutions. And for that we need you!
We are a highly motivated team of about 10 people, some of whom work for SURFcert full-time and many of whom do so in addition to another responsibility. That means a lot of responsibility, scaling up if necessary, short lines of communication and an informal atmosphere. We are a close-knit team and that includes an annual outing, movie night and other social activities.
What you will do
You will strengthen the digital security of the education and research sector. The challenges in this area are growing. As a result, the pressure is increasing and the number of incidents in which we could use extra support is rising. In addition, there is a great deal of ambition from our institutions - and from us - in the areas of detection, signalling and prevention. So we are looking for someone with a passion for cybersecurity and a good technical background. You work closely with educational and research institutions on one of their biggest challenges, namely to be and remain cyber-resilient. Good communication skills are therefore important.
Other tasks you will handle:
- You will answer various questions from our institutions about cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents.
- You will analyse incoming information (including threats) and distribute it to our institutions so that they can take action as effectively as possible.
- You will use our tools to warn institutions about vulnerabilities and risks in their networks. Tools include Nfsen, IntelMQ, CRM and a ticketing system.
- You identify opportunities and room for improvement in tools, working methods and services, and work to realise these improvements.
- You work closely with the cybersecurity experts in the team.
Your skills and experience
- You have a higher professional education (HBO) level of education and thinking.
- You have demonstrable technical knowledge of the cybersecurity domain. Knowledge of internet technology is an advantage.
- You have good analytical skills. Experience with scripting or programming is an advantage.
- You are customer-friendly and communicative and can convey information to clients with varying levels of knowledge and experience.
- You can take on tasks independently and figure out how best to carry them out.
