About SURF and the team Open Science and Skills
SURF is the IT cooperation for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with our members, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.
The team you will be part of
In this position you will be part of the team Open Science and Skills in the Innovation Unit of SURF. This team passionately works on projects, services and expertise to help SURFs cooperative members make the transition to open science. The team is responsible for several programs and projects. This position will focus on the research software domain within open science.

This is what you will do
You will be coordinating the national training and community activities on research software. You will contribute to various networks and initiatives, in particular you will work closely together with the Netherlands eScience center. You will bridge the gap between the communities of research software and the communities around advanced computing and research data infrastructure in the Netherlands. You will align and collaborate with others on (inter)national training activities. Your activities will contribute to thriving research communities where researchers in all disciplines can use advanced software running on advanced research infrastructures.
What else you will be working on
- You will be managing project planning, activities and finances around research software projects;
- You will be organising events, training and workshops;
- You will be organising, developing and professionalising training modules for research software developers and software engineers;
- You will be navigating the networks and manage the communities that focus on research software;
- You will build synergies and foster close collaboration between the training coordination for research software and the National Training and Community Platform for Research Data;
- You will build synergies and foster close collaboration with existing relevant teams and services within SURF;
- You will identify needs and challenges in the research software communities and translate these into activities and input for new and existing projects and services.
Your skills and experience
- You possess Hbo+/academic work and thinking level; you also possess entrepreneurship and initiative;
- You have knowledge of research software, programming skills, applied data science, computational skills and open source;
- You have broad experience (4-6 years) in the field of ICT and research;
- You have experience in community management in research software;
- You have analytical skills and you have excellent communicative skills;
- You act with environmental sensitivity; furthermore you will act result-driven;
- You have an excellent fluency of English and basic understanding of Dutch.
