Atlassian System Engineer

Apply

Are you interested in combination systems, databases and applications in a complex infrastructure? Do you know the Atlassian suite, Jira and Confluence inside out? Do you have experience with the underlying cloud and Linux platform and does DevOps make you happy? Then you could play a wonderful role as an Atlassian Engineer at SURF, the leading ICT service provider for education and science.

Where you will work

SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research. Our rapidly growing organisation receives support from the Internal Services department.

The team you will join

You are part of the Information Management team. We support SURF with system, network and data centre services, office automation, cyber security and the Service Desk. Information Management is responsible for setting up information systems. Together with Operational Support, we ensure that the systems continue to meet the organisation's needs in terms of functionality, performance and continuity. You will work with your colleagues, both within Internal Services and beyond, in a pleasant and collegial atmosphere where you will know almost all your colleagues.

Working at SURF means working for a unique and open organisation. This is evident in everything: the structure of the organisation, the set-up of the project teams, the culture in our offices and the atmosphere among colleagues. SURF offers excellent terms of employment and is flexible when it comes to work/life balance. Employees enjoy working independently. In addition, everyone is given the space and freedom to use and develop their talents as effectively and broadly as possible.

What you will do

Together with your colleagues in Information Management, you will ensure the stability, performance, continuity and security of the Atlassian environment. The Atlassian suite is a vital link in our overall service provision. You will be responsible for managing various Atlassian environments and the underlying Linux platforms, databases, interfaces and plug-ins.

Our challenges for the near future are: broader support for management and support processes, automation of both workflows and interfaces with other systems, standardisation, consolidation and migration, improvement of quantitative and qualitative reporting, and finally the transition from Atlassian Data Centre to a solution yet to be determined (depending on an ongoing tender, in which Atlassian Cloud is also being considered).

Other tasks you will handle

  • You are responsible for the availability, performance, upgrades and configuration management of the Atlassian environment.
  • You ensure the smooth operation of the Atlassian environments, including monitoring the applications, data and platform. You guarantee capacity, performance, continuity and security through your actions.
  • You translate functional and technical questions into solutions together with Information Management;
  • You use your knowledge to help the Service Desk provide support;
  • You resolve complex incidents and prevent them from occurring in the future. You also support the Service Desk by defining workarounds and standard changes;
  • Together with your colleagues, you deliver quantitative and qualitative reports on the services provided;
  • You help improve service delivery by looking at how things can be done more efficiently, including opportunities to transfer activities to first and second line support;
  • Together with your colleagues, you remain critical and continuously learn and improve.

Your skills and experience

  • You have strong communication skills and a customer-friendly, no-nonsense attitude;
  • You have knowledge of and experience with Atlassian Jira, Confluence and related platforms;
  • You have knowledge of and experience with Linux system administration, command line tools and scripting;
  • You have knowledge of ITIL processes;
  • You have higher professional education (HBO) or academic working and thinking level;
  • You are eager to learn and innovate;
  • You have a good command of spoken and written Dutch and English.

SURF takes pleasure in doing its recruitment itself; acquisition is therefore not appreciated.
