Project Manager Network

Apply

SURF's network infrastructure is one of the most important public ICT facilities in the Netherlands, and our services are indispensable for the digital communication of educational and research institutions in the Netherlands. Within SURF's Trusted Digital Infrastructures business unit, we are continuously working on the development of this infrastructure and the associated network and campus services.

You are an experienced project manager who understands what is involved in building complex ICT infrastructures and organising network services. With your knowledge and experience, you will take project management within SURF to the next level. Stakeholder and risk management are essential in this regard.

Where you will work

SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.

At SURF, you will be working in a unique and open organisation. This is evident in everything: the structure of the organisation, the set-up of the project teams, the culture in our offices and the atmosphere among colleagues. SURF offers excellent terms of employment and pays attention to a healthy work/life balance. Employees enjoy working independently. In addition, everyone is given the space and freedom to use and develop their talents as effectively and broadly as possible.

The team you will join

The Network Operations team consists of twelve people and is responsible for all operational activities on the SURF network. This includes, for example, managing and monitoring our suppliers and promoting cooperation between the suppliers, SURF and our affiliated institutions.

Within the unit, there is intensive collaboration with three other teams, comprising a total of around fifty colleagues. Together, they ensure that the SURF network offers innovative, high-quality connectivity and provides appropriate network services to higher education and research in the Netherlands.

What you will do

As a project manager, you will be in charge of various projects in the field of networking. These projects may involve upgrading network infrastructure, implementing new services, improvement processes, specific projects for customers, or renewing our supplier contracts. You will work closely with colleagues from other network teams and, in the context of the projects, you will also have frequent contact with other departments and projects within the SURF organisation. For most projects, you will also work closely with our management partner(s) or other suppliers.

To perform this role effectively, you will first and foremost need a wide range of project management skills. You will have good communication skills, be open and approachable, be able to motivate people, set clear and realistic goals, have an eye for detail without losing sight of the bigger picture, be persistent and keep a firm grip on the time, budget and scope of our projects at all times. In addition, you have experience with projects in the field of network infrastructures and you have a good understanding of what is involved in IT service management.

Your skills and experience

You have at least higher professional education (HBO) working and thinking level. You are decisive, structured and service-oriented. You are open to change, have strong communication skills and are a team player.

In addition, you have:

  • Knowledge and experience in the field of project management (Prince, Ipma, Scrum, etc.);
  • At least 5 years of experience with projects in the field of network infrastructure;
  • Knowledge and experience in the field of IT service management (ITIL, SIAM, FITSIM) and risk management (ISO31000 or MoR);
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, both in Dutch and English;
  • Knowledge of and affinity with the non-profit sector and the world of education or research is an advantage.

SURF takes pleasure in doing its recruitment itself; acquisition is therefore not appreciated.
