Linux Engineer Internal IT

Apply

Quality, continuity and security: are these values you stand for? Do you enjoy being the linchpin of internal automation and do you get energy from managing and monitoring systems and networks? Do you take care to carefully prepare and maintain documentation, and do you enjoy supporting users in their daily work? Then we are looking for you to join us in ensuring the stability and quality of our systems and services.

Where you will work

SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research. In addition, we work closely with various research communities and other ICT partners, both nationally and internationally, to develop impactful solutions.

The team you will join

In our growing organisation, the Internal IT SURF department supports the internal organisation with system, network, data centre services and office automation in close collaboration with the Information Management team.
You will be part of the Operations team, which brings information systems into production and maintains them. You will work with colleagues, both within Internal IT and beyond, in a pleasant and collegial atmosphere.

What you will do

You will draw up clear documentation and ensure that processes and systems function optimally. You will work in an Agile manner, in two-week sprints, and will have a technically challenging role within a team of enthusiastic colleagues in an organisation that matters. Thanks to your technical affinity, you enjoy diving into new issues yourself, and at SURF you will have every opportunity to do so.

Other tasks you will handle

  • You will maintain and manage the IT systems and environments from a technical and operational perspective, identify bottlenecks and make suggestions for improvement.
  • You will support the roll-out/replacement of systems and be responsible for the availability, performance and security of the various IT environments. You will identify and address deviations and risks.
  • You resolve complex incidents and provide third-line support. You develop tooling and software to automate tasks as much as possible.
  • You work with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Ansible, Podman / Docker (-compose)
  • Together with Information Management, you translate functional questions into practical solutions and contribute to continuous improvement within

Your skills and experience

You are a curious and independent Linux specialist who enjoys discovering new technologies and using them to improve systems and processes. You work from a sound technical understanding, combine this with a customer-oriented mindset and feel at home in an Agile working environment.

In addition, you have:

  • Higher professional education (HBO) level of working and thinking and at least 2 years of relevant work experience;
  • Knowledge of and experience with Linux scripting (e.g. Bash and Python), and are curious about emerging technologies. Preferably experience with Atlassian JIRA, Confluence and related platforms, and knowledge of ITIL and Agile
