Where you will work

SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research.

We are pioneers in network technology and we want to be among the world's best with Dutch research and education. That is why we want to innovate and use quantum technology, because that way we offer users the best infrastructure and expertise. Examples include: one of Europe's quantum computers will be located here. We are also setting up our own testbed for the quantum key distribution network.

The team you will join

You will be part of the Quantum Communication Team, which is part of the SURF Open Innovation Lab. Within it, you will work closely with the network services department. In terms of projects, we encourage you to take a broad view: participate in projects to which you can contribute most, but also in projects you find interesting or which you would like to know more about. In addition, SURF offers a high level of knowledge. People are always open to learn and share their expertise.

You will work in the SURF Open Innovation Lab team. This team focuses on key technologies and applications for the future of the education and research sector. Currently, these include Cloud, AI, Data, Quantum and Advanced Computing and Networking.

What you will do

You will unlock the quantum internet for research and education. You will do this by building up knowledge within this growing field and also ensure that SURF uses quantum networks. In addition you will work with others to develop quantum-enhanced network services for our users. You will contribute to medium- and long-term developments in High-Performance Computing, Networking, Quantum Technology, Data Processing, Data Management & Artificial Intelligence. This is how you make a difference to our society.

Other tasks you will handle:

  • You will collaborate in building the network's quantum infrastructure. You will develop and implement technical test environments for experiments.
  • You will introduce quantum technology in an operational network.
  • Together with researchers, you will develop applications and use cases using SURF's quantum infrastructure. You will also identify and demonstrate the added value of quantum communication for research and education in the Netherlands.
  • You will collaborate with the network services team on the development of quantum services. You will supervise internships, BsC and MsC student projects.
  • You will be one of the ambassadors of quantum at SURF towards its members, customers, users and industry.
  • You will collaborate in developing the quantum communication vision and strategy.
  • You will collaborate with international parties such as SURF's sister organisations and GÉANT in the field of quantum communication.
  • You will communicate results and share knowledge at national and international conferences and events. You also support the organisation of symposia, workshops, hackathons, etc.

Your skills and experience

  • You have an MSc/PhD in technical sciences (electrical engineering, physics, computer science, etc.)
  • You have at least 3 years of relevant experience OR a PhD in a relevant field.
  • You can design proof-of-concepts, test environments or pilots. Furthermore, you have experience with product, service or software development processes. You can also program in Python.
  • You have a demonstrable interest in quantum technology, cyber security and/or privacy technologies.
  • You have good online and offline communication skills - you know how to adapt your message to your listener.

Prior to starting this job, a VOG must be presented.
