Where you will work
SURF is the IT cooperative of Dutch education and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation issues to enhance the quality of education and research. With 550 permanent staff and over 200 flexible workers, SURF is in full swing.
The teams you will join
The Finance & Control department supports SURF's financial management with advice, reporting and an active role in strategic issues. The department consists of two teams: Planning & Control and Financial Accounting. The Planning & Control team is SURF's business conscience. This team supports strategic choices, monitors financial health and connects internal and external steering information. The Financial Accounting team ensures correct financial administration, salary administration, tax returns, subsidy administration and annual accounts. It also advises on subsidy projects and tax issues.
As Concern Controller and Manager, you are part of several teams. In the management team, you will take part in offsite meetings and strategy days, in addition to the regular meetings. The Finance & Control department organizes an annual event and team sessions with all 24 employees of the department, for example about how we can improve the way we cooperate. What you will do
You are the link between the Board of Directors, the management and your department. You also directly manage 3 employees (2 Team Leads and one project controller). A total of 24 permanent staff work in these departments. SURF is a complex organization with diverse revenue streams, in which both members and non-members participate in services and projects. These dynamics require sharp financial steering, a collaborative approach and strong leadership skills.
Other things you will do
- You will advise the Executive and Supervisory Boards on risk management and financial strategies.
- You will lead the Finance & Control department in a transition to a more mature, future-oriented function.
- You will work on a new organisational set-up and the implementation of modern processes and systems.
- You will develop a strategic vision of finance and control, and translate this into a clear roadmap.
- You will connect finance with the business through a coaching leadership style.
- You will prepare the transition to a new financial system and supervise this process together with your team.
Your skills and experience
- You are a high-level sparring partner, both for the Executive Board and for your teams. You dare to set frameworks, address where necessary, and above all know how to connect and inspire.
- You show strategic and connecting leadership and you have extensive experience in both profit and non-profit organisations. Your leadership style is coaching and motivating.
- You can translate financial insights into clear advice and concrete actions.
- You have experience with complex organisations and project financing (e.g. EU, NWO).
- You have a strong focus on process optimisation and digitalisation.
