Vacancy Technical Productmanager Campus Network Access Services

As Technical Productmanager Campus Network Access Services you are always up to date with the latest (wireless) network authentication techniques, web and app software development. Together with your colleagues, you are committed to achieving the best results and ensuring secure and unlimited access to campus networks. At SURF you will also use your talents to make a big social impact for Dutch research and education in network services!

About SURF and the Campus & Wireless networks team

SURF is the collaboration organization for IT for Dutch education and research. SURF works with educational and research institutions on IT facilities and IT innovation to make the best use of the opportunities offered by digitization.

The Campus & Wireless Networks team innovates, develops and delivers services in the broad field of campus network infrastructure, wireless and mobile technology and network access for the benefit of education and research. We provide unlimited wire-free network access on and around campus through the services eduroam, SURFwireless (wifi-as-a-service) and iotroam as well as projects such as Future Network Services, Campus Network as a Service, AI and sustainable Wi-Fi, 6G and Smart Campus.

What does this job entail?

As Technical Product Manager you will work on a number of great services and projects at SURF: eduroam, iotroam and eduroam Visitor Access (partly international). With its eduroam service, SURF has for years ensured that students and staff of educational and research institutions can access campus networks worldwide via wifi in a secure and user-friendly manner. To realize that visitors to an educational institution can access the Internet via wifi, SURF has been offering the eduroam Visitor Access (eVA) to other research networks nationally but also internationally for several years. To connect (smart) devices to campus networks, SURF recently provided a new service, iotroam. For the delivery and (further) development of eVA and iotroam we are looking for a technical product manager (TPM). This TPM will additionally support the technical product manager of eduroam, particularly in the development of apps associated with eduroam (such as the app geteduroam).

We expect the TPM to have knowledge and experience with issues of (the security of) network authentication, web and Android/IOS app software development. Some knowledge and experience with information security and wired/wireless network technology is necessary. Knowledge and experience with eduroam, passpoint and/or openroaming setup is appreciated. Consider techniques such as RADIUS, NAC, EAP, SSL, WPA3 and SAML .

What are you going to do exactly?

As Technical Product Manager

  • you will ensure that the software (developed by SURF itself) used within the eVA and iotroam services is developed further on the basis of the needs of SURF's members. This does not require in-depth programmer experience but we do expect the TPM to be able to manage programmers and provide clear input for the (continued) development of these services;
  • you are responsible for keeping eduroam Visitor Access (international), iotroam and (the applications belonging to) eduroam operational;
  • you are backup of the eduroam TPM and contribute to the software development of tools associated with eduroam such as geteduroam;
  • together with the product manager, translate user requirements into new functionality and ensure integration into the network services (Campus Network as a Service) portfolio;
  • you work together with the product managers and technical product managers of the team and department and contribute your knowledge and experience to innovation projects in the area of network infrastructure;
  • you support our institutions in making optimal use of services and knowledge exchange;
  • continue to refresh your technical knowledge in our ever-changing organization, ensuring improvement and innovation in the services and service portfolio.

We ask

As Technical Product Manager, you work independently, are customer-oriented and ensure that you always deliver the best product. You always have the right technical knowledge at hand and work in a structured way. Within the team you take on projects together with your colleagues, in which you contribute proactively. You are also flexible, within a project things can change quickly and you are expected to be able to adapt quickly.

In addition, you have:

  • at least 5 years of relevant work experience;
  • analytical capacity: you can interpret data and initiate improvement actions;
  • good knowledge of and practical experience with relevant techniques;
  • experience or affinity with education and/or research;
  • excellent command of the Dutch and English languages, both verbally and in writing.

We offer

  • A varied and challenging job for 32 to 40 hours (0.8 - 1.0 fte) in an informal and collegial atmosphere with a high level of ambition;
  • Extensive training opportunities and excellent fringe benefits;
  • A salary range of 4189 - 6875 EUR gross based on full-time;
  • 8.33% vacation allowance, a fixed year-end bonus of 8.33%;
  • 36 vacation days per year (based on a 40-hour work week);
  • A good pension plan with PNO media, where you yourself contribute only 1/8th of the premium and SURF contributes 7/8ths;
  • An NS Business Card 1st class;
  • The opportunity for hybrid work and you will receive a home office allowance on work-at-home days;
  • Two great locations, in Amsterdam and Utrecht, both with good public transport facilities. Your main location will be: Utrecht. Our Utrecht office is located within walking distance of Utrecht CS.
  • A contract for one year initially, with the intention of converting to permanent employment after one year.

SURF takes great pleasure in doing its recruitment itself; acquisition is therefore not appreciated.
