Apply

Help build the digital future of education.

Are you a curious, analytical front-end developer? Do you enjoy working with modern technologies and does building smart, secure, and privacy-conscious solutions for our end users energize you? And would you also like to play a key role in the future of student mobility in the Netherlands? Then this position as Front-end Developer eduXchange at SURF is exactly where you are looking for.

Where you will work

SURF is the ICT cooperative for Dutch educational and research institutions. Together with them, we work on digital services and complex innovation challenges to enhance the quality of education and research. Within our Education Services department, we work with institutions to develop smart solutions for flexible education, digital learning materials, and the sharing of educational data. As a front-end developer at eduXchange, you will contribute to this effort.

The team you will join

You will be joining the new development team, one of four teams within the Education Services department. The team works on developing and using services in the field of digital learning materials and flexible education for vocational, higher professional, and university education. From this team, you will be assigned to the eduXchange product team. There, you will work together with a product manager, a technical product manager, software developers, and a UX designer. We have an open attitude towards each other and help each other where necessary.

Working at SURF means working for a unique and open organization. This is evident in everything: the structure of the organization, the setup of the project teams, the culture in our offices, and the atmosphere among colleagues. SURF offers excellent terms of employment and takes a flexible approach to work/life balance. Employees enjoy working independently. In addition, everyone is given the space and freedom to use and develop their talents as effectively and broadly as possible.

What you will do

As a Front-end Developer, you will play a key role in the further development of the eduXchange service. EduXchange brings together the educational offerings of alliances (collaborations between educational institutions). The front-end of eduXchange makes it as user-friendly as possible for students to explore and sign up for these offerings. You will ensure that this front-end is and remains user-friendly and performs optimally.

What else are you involved in?

  • You develop new front-end solutions and ensure that they perform optimally;
  • Together with the other developers, you review code and suggest improvements (DevOps);
  • You contribute ideas for new applications and support the UX designer and technical product manager in designing new functionality and improving the user experience;
  • You develop supporting tools for testing and quality control.

Your skills and experience

  • You have a higher professional education (HBO) or university education (WO) level of working and thinking, preferably in the field of Computer Science or Software Engineering, with 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • You work independently and have a results-oriented approach—you never lose sight of the higher goal for our users.
  • You are a team player with good communication skills—you communicate clearly with both tech colleagues and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You have experience with (open source) software development and development methodologies in an innovative environment;
  • You have experience with Cypress, Next.js, and Typescript;
  • Knowledge of and experience with Privacy by Design and Security by Design is an advantage (preferred).

SURF takes pleasure in doing its recruitment itself; acquisition is therefore not appreciated.
