Where you will work

SURF is the IT collaborative organisation for Dutch higher education and research. SURF supports researchers in the fields of data management, high performance computing (HPC) and visualisation. To this end, we work closely with various research communities and other providers of expertise and IT facilities, both nationally and internationally. Together, we aim to improve the quality of education and research by developing digital services and addressing complex innovation issues.

The team you will join

In our growing organisation, the Internal Services department supports the internal organisation with system, network and data centre, office automation, cyber security and Service Desk services. We do this in close cooperation with the Information Management team. Together, we ensure that the functionality, performance and continuity of these services continue to meet the needs of the organisation and our members.

You will be part of the Operational Support team. This team is responsible for bringing information systems into production. Together with Information Management, this team also ensures that the functionality, performance and continuity of the systems continue to meet the organisation's needs. You will work with your colleagues, both within Internal Services and beyond, in a pleasant and collegial atmosphere.

What you will do

You will be responsible for SURF's data centre infrastructure. Together with your colleagues, you will keep the data centre environment safe and operational for our customers and act as the technical point of contact for daily data centre operations. You ensure minimal downtime of the data centre equipment and actively maintain mission-critical data servers, networks and physical infrastructure. You perform operational management, install equipment and maintain existing equipment and keep it up to date. The team works according to Agile principles and the Scrum framework.

Other tasks you will handle:

  • You will install, manage and maintain the IT hardware and infrastructure in our data centres. You will identify bottlenecks and make suggestions for improvement.
  • You perform daily data centre, server and network hardware activities and installations. You also maintain servers and network infrastructure and replace physical components.
  • You update and maintain data centre administration and documentation, including rack layouts, PDU management and asset management. You do this using our DCIM and power management tools.
  • You will be responsible for knowledge development and knowledge transfer and will provide solicited and unsolicited advice to internal and external parties.
  • You will lead or participate in projects. If necessary, you will travel to other data centre locations (NH) to assist with projects.

Your skills and experience

  • You have an intermediate or higher vocational education and training level of thinking and working;
  • You have excellent technical and communication skills; You are also able to work autonomously;
  • You have an affinity with data centre environments and preferably more than 2 years of work experience within a data centre environment in an IT/technical operations role.
  • You can think and act from the perspective of the company's objectives and the added value for the customer.
  • You have a good command of the Dutch and/or English language, both spoken and written.

Nice to have

  • You have knowledge of and experience with Agile and Scrum.
  • You have knowledge of and experience with ITSM and ITIL.
  • You have knowledge and experience with data centre and/or network/server troubleshooting and hardware repair.
  • You have experience with NVIDIA, Dell or HP hardware.

Prior to starting this job, a VOG must be presented.
